Brooklyn Nets History
The Nets have a pretty long history, even among the other NBA teams. They were founded in 1967, and were part of the founding fathers of the ABA, the American Basketball Association. They were initially backed by a trucking tycoon by the name of Arthur J. Brown, which became their owner. As many basketball fans should know, the ABA was the predecessor, and rival basketball association, of the NBA we know and love today. They played for two years, from 1967-1968, as the New Jersey Americans. That was short lived, as they had to change locations and name, where they became known as the New York Nets. They continued to play in the ABA until 1976, when the ABA and the NBA finally merged. Luckily, the New York Nets were part of four team group to be included into the NBA. A year later, they went back to New Jersey where they once again changed names to the New Jersey Nets. It wasn’t until recently, in 2012, that the Nets underwent another change. They moved back to New York, and now play under the name, Brooklyn Nets.
Brooklyn Nets Game Changers
Every single basketball fan should know this name, Julius Erving, also known as Dr. J. He was a household name for being the player with the most spring in his jump. Many say that Michael Jordan was Julius Erving, just in more modern times. He was a spectacular player, and played for the Nets before they joined the NBA.
Dražen Petrović will always be remembered in the Nets history. He was a great player that helped the team improve during the 1992 season. Sadly, his career, and life ended when he died in a car accident in 1993.
Although the Nets move to Brooklyn was very recent, July 26, 2012, it did have messes along the way. As such, the person that swooped in and saved the Nets was Mikhail Prokhorov, by agreeing to a $200 million dollar deal, which led to him becoming an owner of the team.
A duo that had the whole NBA watching with anticipation also became a game changer for the Nets. The Nets already had Jason Kidd on their roster from a trade years before, but it wasn’t until Vince Carter showed up in 2004 that the team took off. Kidd finally found a partner that he could be in sync with.
Brooklyn Nets Arena
With their recent move, they will need time to start adapting to their new basketball court in Brooklyn. The arena is named Barclays Center, which took some time get built before the team made their move. Moving to different arenas should be no problem for the Nets, as they have moved to three different arenas in 3 years.
Brooklyn Nets Coaching
The current head coach of the Brooklyn Nets is Avery Johnson. Johnson used to be a point guard and has played for several top teams including the Spurs, Nuggets, and the Mavericks. When he began his career, he started out as the assistant coach for the Dallas Mavericks, where after a short period he then became the coach. In 2010, he decided to make a move and is now the current head coach for the Nets.
Betting on the Brooklyn Nets
There are rumors of the Nets possibly getting Dwight Howard in a trade with the Orlando Magic, but it seems the Nets didn’t get what they wanted. Instead, they re-signed Brook Lopez on for four more years. Lopez is an excellent center, but he is weak on defense, which could become a liability for the Nets. They have Joe Johnson, Kris Humphries, and Deron Williams in their starting lineup. This makes for a strong team, which in turn has increased their odds at winning the title. Their last season record was 22-44, but they are hoping to improve this next season. The team is getting used to a new move, having a roster that is a little above average, and not much confidence.
