Memphis Grizzlies’ History

One of the newest NBA franchises, the Memphis Grizzlies were established in 1995 as an expansion franchise along with the Toronto Raptors, however their first home was not Memphis. The NBA was trying to make its way into Canada with these two franchises with a team in Toronto and Vancouver. After some dismal seasons and poor attendances the Vancouver Grizzlies were sold and moved to Memphis Tennessee. After the move to the United States the team has done much better, however probably not as well as fans would like. Memphis has made the National Basketball Association’s playoffs several times now, however they have not won many playoff series or even made it to the conference championship game. Since this franchise is so young it lacks the history that many other franchises have it terms of hall of fame players and coaches.

Memphis Grizzlies Ownership

The Grizzlies majority owner is Robert Pera, who made his money as CEO Ubiquiti Networs. Pera became the majority owner when of the team in 2012. Recently he has added some famous minority owners to his crew including Justin Timberlake, Elliot Perry, and Peyton Manning. These owners help to draw attention to a franchise that has had trouble gaining the national spotlight.

Memphis Grizzlies Arena

Grizzlies play their home games in the FedEx Forum, also known as the “Grindhouse” to local fans. Memphis began playing their games here in 2004 after leaving Pyramid Arena, also in Memphis. FedEx Forum can hold up to 18,119 spectators for basketball games and has the capability to host hockey and other types of events. The FedEx Forum is also where the University of Memphis plays their men’s home basketball games.

Memphis’ Fan Base for the Grizzlies’ NBA Team

Since the Grizzlies have not gone deep into the playoffs yet their fans have not had too much to cheer about. Despite the team’s recent regular season success their attendance numbers do not reflect this. Inside the FedEx Forum the fans that do come can be seen being pumped up by the Grizz, the teams burly mascot. While the Grizzlies do not have a great fan base yet, it should improve quickly as this young team develops and local spectators become more energetic about their basketball NBA team.

Memphis Grizzlies Basketball Coaching

Like many struggling franchises, the Grizzlies have had many different coaches hold short stints with the basketball team and quickly let go after some disappointing seasons. Current coach Lionel Hollins is the only coach to stay for over three years. In addition to coaching the team since 2009, Hollins has had two stints as interim coach before becoming the full time head coach. Hollins owns one of the best winning percentages in Memphis history and that number has been climbing in more recent seasons. Hollins is also the only coach in Memphis history to win a single playoff game and a playoff series.

Memphis Grizzlies Betting

Previously, NBA betting on the Memphis Grizzlies on any futures bet would not have been very prudent, however this is beginning to change. Memphis should remain among the favorites to win the Southwest Division for the next few years. In fact, it would not be preposterous to think that the Grizzlies could be the favorites to win the division in the near future. The team is not one of the favorites to win either the NBA Finals or the Western Conference Finals. This may be partially attributed to the team’s poor playoff performance in past years. Regardless this means that the Grizzlies offer a large payout for anyone who believes they can make a deep playoff run. On a game-to-game basis the consistent play of the team’s big men should lead to a consistent performance from the team. Consistency should make Memphis one of the easier teams to predict and then bet on any single game.
